Boost Your Metabolism With More Calories

If you are among these folks, you find yourself tempted to do drastic things to change your diet so you can reduce the number of calories you eat. This is the wrong approach because drastically reducing your calorie consumption is only going to sabotage your efforts at weight loss.

Texas Dietetic Association’s public relations associate, Dr.  Kimberly Lummus, points out that when a person stops eating as a  means to losing weight fast it has the opposite effect. This is because if a person’s caloric intake dips too drastically, the body responds by going into what is called starvation mode. Starvation mode is when the body senses that not enough food is being provided and it reacts by holding onto fat reserves in an attempt to ensure survival.

Stop eating enough and in a short time, your body reacts in such a manner, causing weight loss to stop. According to Dr. Lummus, when a body goes into starvation mode, metabolism slows down tremendously. This is also so the body can conserve any energy it has left, still presuming there is a shortage of nutrition for it.

Many dieters are familiar with the term ‘plateau‘. This occurs when, after a successful time of losing weight, suddenly the pounds stop budging. This is sometimes caused by the slowing of a person’s metabolism.

Eat too few calories and a vicious cycle ensue. You get frustrated that the scale is no longer going down, you take in fewer calories and still see no more results, having reached a plateau. You then give up on the diet, resume normal eating habits or even start over eating due to stress, and you gain back all the weight you lost.

Dr. Lummus also points out that because it is hard to keep up with cutting back on calories is that a person gives up and gets too hungry, so they end up binging. Cutting back too much on calories is not just a diet-buster, there are other health problems it can lead to such as low blood pressure, slow heart rate, and arrhythmias.  Potassium deficiencies can also occur along with imbalances in electrolytes.

Hair loss and brittle fingernails are also signs of poor nutrition as a result of too few calories. Dizziness, difficulty concentrating and anemia are also common after a period of low caloric intake.

Calories are not an enemy. Remember this as you pursue your weight loss goals. Your body needs them to perform properly. Fad diets are popular for promising quick weight loss but they compromise a person’s well-being by drastically cutting back on calories and the nutrients the body receives.

Forget about fad diets that require a huge cut back on calories. Find a reasonable diet to follow, and of course, get plenty of exercises each week. A healthy weight loss plan will allow you to lose about a pound or two each week. Slow and steady is the way to go, and as you follow your  diet plan, you develop good habits that follow you through life.
